The article below is from todays Guardian, Skeptics always assumed I was anti GCC because I wanted softer regulation, I am against the GCC because they are another Goverment quango not fit for purpose. Made up of people more interested in their own positions rather than performing the job they have been given.  Before reading the article read how the GCC was reformed in 2009 to be less democratic and maintain the status quo http://www.chiropracticlive.com/new-reformed-gcc/ Britain’s shadow government: unelected, unbalanced and unaccountable Democracy itself is being undermined by publicly funded agencies crawling with conflicts of interest and devoid of scrutiny George Monbiot guardian.co.uk, Monday 12 March 2012 16.27 GMT‘From any single perspective’, Bertrand Russell said, “power always seems to be elsewhere”. This article is about one of those elsewheres. It is about the network of unelected committees, boards and commissions, operating below the public radar, through which governments pursue the aims that weren’t disclosed in their manifestos. The people they appoint are an index to the interests they serve. To list them is to expose the gulf between what a government claims to be and what it is. It would be misleading to suggest that the process I’m about to discuss is new. Blair […]

NW Portland Gets New Master Planned Community

Con-way has long owned the majority, but not all, of land to the west  of I-405 by the NW Vaughn exit around NW 21st.  Development plans have been in the works for years and a coming closer to fruition.  Historically the area has been known as Slabtown and abuts the Alphabet District but that may not be a sexy enough moniker for the new development.  There’s a good description of the project here.

The first thing to be built is a grocery story by a currently unnamed entity.  Building the services first takes a different tack to the South Waterfront where the residences were built first and when the economy flagged, the services were slow to come in.  Buying groceries as South Waterfront resident still leaves leaving the area for either Zupans on Macadam Avenue or Safeway on SW Jefferson (there is a small shop and a few restaurants currently serving the South Waterfront along with a growing contingent of food carts).  The Con-way development has the advantage of new apartments already going in on NW 23 and on NW Lovejoy and residences of the Alphabet District that lack a grocery store to call their own, the nearest being the soon to be remodeled Fred Myer and Zupans on Burnside and the new(er) Safeway in the Pearl.

The Link Between Hypothyroidism and Pregnancy by Kevin Doherty

#followform { padding-top:5px; text-align:left; }

Hypothyroidism and pregnancy have been linked with each other for the longest time now. They are two very interrelated types of conditions. More importantly, women are at increased risks of developing hypothyroidism when they are pregnant or right after when they give birth. Thus, pregnancy in a certain way can be almost equated to hypothyroidism because the increase in risks it poses to the person.

Since pregnancy is already a very sensitive condition and when couple with hypothyroidism, it can turn into something very crucial for both the mother and the baby. Women are always advised to be very careful when dealing with pregnancy. As much as possible, they need to go through several tests just to make sure that they are not suffering from hypothyroidism. Unnoticed hypothyroidism can lead to a lot of problems even as worse as pregnancy loss. The following sections provide a more detailed look on hypothyroidism and pregnancy.

Hypothyroidism and its Effects on Pregnancy

Hypothyroidism can impact pregnancy in many different ways. These are discussed as follows:

Pregnant women suffering from a condition of hypothyroidism are at increased risk for having miscarriage than those who don’t.

Pregnant women suffering from a condition of hypothyroidism that has not been treated or noticed for a long time are at increased chances of having high blood pressure and premature delivery.

Infants whose mothers have suffered from hypothyroidism usually encounter problems when it comes to their mental development. There have been many cases where infants were not able to achieve or maximize their mental capacity because of previous condition of hypothyroidism associated with their mothers.

Women are also at prone of getting infertile following their diagnosis of hypothyroidism.

Since hypothyroidism can bring about a range of problems both for the born child and the unborn one, doctors strongly recommend that expectant mothers get tested immediately or a couple of times to ensure that they are not suffering hypothyroidism. The sooner an expectant mother gets diagnosed, the faster appropriate treatments and medications can be administered. Multiple tests are important because thyroid hormone levels are somewhat unstable so it is impossible to pinpoint the exact gravity of the condition without doing multiple tests. Likewise, even after treatment or all throughout the medication, it is still necessary to monitor hormone levels to make sure that they stay within ideal levels.

The amount of thyroid hormones to be administered as part of the medication relies on the severity of the condition. There are individuals who may require more dosages while others only require a small amount. Further, dosages also need to be adjusted depending on the current hormone level of the person. This is why monitoring constantly is an important aspect of treatment for hypothyroidism in pregnancy.

Chiropractors Warn Of Cool Weather Germs: Columbus, OH

Once the weather starts cooling it seems like the germs start multiplying. Cool weather seems unanimous with illness. So, what can you do to slow down colds, flus, headaches and more?

There’s no confusion about it, handwashing is one of the most effective ways to combat the spread of germs including the common cold. At a minimum, you should wash your hands for 20 seconds after sneezing or coughing into them, after using the bathroom, after handling garbage, before handling food and after playing with your pets. Getting rid of germs early on slows down the spread of both common and atypical germs.

Disinfect your workspace. Whether you care for children, work at a desk, talk on the phone or cook in a kitchen, it’s important to decontaminate your workspace. Germs can fester for hours or days and once you handle one infected item, everything that is touched after will be infected. Make a regular routine of cleaning your work area each day. It will minimize the spread of germs and cut down on illness.

Be aware of your surroundings. Take note of what you touch and then where you put your hands. Touching door knobs, elevator buttons, handrails and grocery carts are some of the most germ infested items you can touch. If you’re at work, school or out in a public place be cautious about where you put your hands. Touching your nose, mouth or eyes is an easy way to expose yourself to germs that may be lingering on your hands. Keep hand sanitizer close by and wash your hands frequently.

Cooler weather doesn’t have to mean illness. Becoming aware of your surroundings and taking a few simple steps to keep things clean around you can make a big difference. Make sure to see your chiropractic specialist on a regular basis as well. Preventative care can go a long way for you and your whole family.

Houston: Looking to 2012

Did Houston have a picture-perfect 2010? Well, not exactly, but there are more than a few reasons to look forward to what the Houston real estate market has to offer in 2012.

Houston in 2012 will enjoy a stronger real estate market, thanks to steady increases in the energy-related job market. It was this market that kept real estate agents busy leasing commercial property and showing homes to relocating individuals.

Housing in Houston in 2012 may see about a 5-percent increase as we head into the upcoming year, and the median price of a Houston home is expected to increase from 2 to 3 percent this year. Although these numbers are lower than what we may expect historically, they are still showing a steady growth in the Houston housing market.

Foreclosures in Houston

Since 2010, foreclosure postings and actual foreclosures have declined, and most real estate experts expect these declines to further accelerate in 2012. These declines are likely attributed to the tight lending standards that took place starting in 2009. It is also likely that the financial industry has finally started to make headway in their backlogs of foreclosures resulting from the recession.

It is clear that in order to begin seeing a turnaround in the real estate market lenders must deal with the foreclosure problem, which has been a strain on the industry since 2009. It is also important to understand that lenders will experience issues now for foreclosures that occurred three years prior, meaning that they are just now facing the music from the steep increase in foreclosures in 2009.

Home Loan Lending in Houston

The national mortgage market is still expected to decline in 2012 about 25 percent, although the large markets in Texas, such as Dallas and Houston, are expected to outperform national averages due to the strong job markets found here.

Houston continues to experience increases in its energy sector, which always buoys along the real estate market.

There are plenty of good reasons to look forward to a healthy real estate market in Houston in 2012, so many real estate experts will be keeping a close eye on this market in the months to come.
